Technical Guidelines
Handling and storage
- We deliver our driveshafts ready for installation and service.
- Shafts are balanced, painted and lubricated.
- Shafts are precision products that can be damaged or even entirely destroyed by incorrect handling or storage.
- Shafts must be protected against shocks and impacts of any type during handling and installation.
- Shafts should be transported in horizontal position or, if not possible, secured against displacement.
- Shafts should be stored in dry rooms, protected against adverse weather conditions, especially humidity.
- The packaging we provide is intended and suitable for brief handling and storage only.
Installation Recommendations
- The surfaces of shaft flanges and their counterpart coupling flanges should be free from contamination (such as rust-proofing agents, paints, grease or others liquids or solids) and damage before installation. Never attempt to align a shaft by hammering its flange.
- Do not drill additional holes or ream the existing ones and do not reduce the thickness of the connecting flange.
- Check that the forked tips and marks (arrows) of the shaft are aligned correctly.
- Tighten the flanged connection bolts evenly (diagonally) with a torque wrench. Use bolts of approved strength (recommended by vehicle manufacturer) and self-locking nuts conforming to the DIN980 standard. Do not apply any additional lubricant to the bolts and nuts.
- Re-lubricate shafts after longer storage (after installation, before putting it in service) with lubricant pressure not exceeding 15 bar.
- Only trained personnel should be allowed to install driveshafts.
Operation
- Driveshafts delivered by MECHANIX are lubricated, ready for installation and service within the -25 to +80 °C temperature range.
- The shaft should be serviced (lubricated at the indicated points) on each regular inspection in accordance with recommendations from the vehicle manufacturer but not later than:
Vans, trucks and buses in regular service (roads)
Vans, trucks and rail vehicles used in mixed service (roads and off-road)
Vans, trucks and rail vehicles used in city traffic and off-road service, buses used in city traffic and construction machines
Every 10,000 km or 2 times per year
Every 5,000 km or 200 hrs. in service
Every 2,500 km or 100 hrs. in service
- Heavy-duty application conditions can reduce the foregoing travel distances/times between inspections.
- Also, lubricate the shaft after each washing the chassis with water or steam jet.
- Feed lubricant using a grease gun until lubricant becomes visible on the seals.
